Steps I Took To Get Out of Debt Accumulated in 20 Years

Yes, you read that correctly. I've been in a terrible debt for 20 years and I tell you, it's one of the most horrible feelings I've had during my adulting years.

In today's post, I'll be talking about how I got out of debt which accumulated in 20 years and also the importance of paying debts even if no one is chasing (or they got tired of it) you anymore to pay them. Also some financial management tips which I also learned along the way. Thanks to my hits and misses as well as my financial management failures - I learned the lessons for you. So please, don't be like me. Or if you are in a huge debt right now, I tell you, there's hope and YES you can end it too, just like how I did.

Whar are the debts that you could be in? In my case, I had six (6) credit card debts and it reached a whopping P1,300,00.00 plus interests. You could also be in a personal loan from people you know. It could also be from government or private financial institutions. As long as it's borrowed money and you haven't paid it yet, that's debt.

I wish you don't fall into a trap of borrowing money to pay another debt until you realize you've been in a debt cycle you cannot escape from. You'll later be in much more debt if you keep on digging this hole.

HOW TO GET OUT OF DEBT - A DEBT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

1. ACKNOWLEDGE - The first step is to acknowledge the debt that you have. By acknowledging it you'd get to assess your financial health and take steps in managing and getting out of it. After acknowledging it, you have to decide to pay off your debts and when to pay them.

2. PLAN - Now that you've acknowledged your financial crisis, I call having debt as crisis, it will be clearer for you to plan your next steps. It's best to prepare a list at this time. First make a list of all your debts. Next is to make a list of ways how you can pay them. List down your source of income, your other funds, your regular expenses, and even expenses you can let go off for the time being until you pay your debts. Compute if you're income and other sources of funds are lower than the amount of debt you have to pay. List down how you plan to pay your debts. Set a goal you need to save weekly or monthly until all your debts are paid. If your income is less than your debt, we can go to the next step.

3. LOOK FOR OTHER SOURCES - Other sources may mean two things: another sources of income to offset the deficit. It may be from an extra job, an online business you could do on your free time, it could also be from services you could offer other individuals or companies which will bring you extra savings you can use to pay off your debts. Now go back to your savings goals and make sure you meet this goal with the extra sources of income you could generate.

4. CALL HELP - Upon acknowledging your debts and assessing your capability to pay and seeing your financial or debt paying plans, you can now call the institutions you have outstanding balances to negotiate the amount you could pay on a monthly basis for a given period of time let's say 3, 6, 9, 12 months up to 36 months depending on how big your debt is. You can always have a friendly payment arrangement that will not leave you broke. The important thing is your intention to pay and clear your name so that you're accounts will be closed.

5. LOOK FOR FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS - that would help you get essential loans even if you have a bad credit. Given that you have other expenses especially big ticket annual expenses for the family such as tuition fees of your schooling children, loaning an amount for these type of important expense is forgivable. Good thing there are short-term financial solutions out there for people who struggle with a not so good credit due to outstanding balances from other institutions because of debt. I know friends who I'm helping with their personal debt management availed of student loans from creditloan.com. This type of important and essential loan for the future of their kids are the type of loans that I too would avail should there be a need. The needs of our children of course comes first.

6. START PAYING - Once that you have a master plan on handling your debts and managing it, it's time to start paying. Make sure that you don't commit the same mistake as I did when I started paying. I missed a few payments and it greatly affected my credit score and even added interests which got me into a deeper debt problem. The moment I realized this, I looked for multiple source of income with paying all my debts in mind. When I saved enough money, even if these institutions weren't running after me, I called them one by one to let them know if my intent to pay and that I am finally settling all my balances. Ask if there are any amnesty programs you could avail and if there are any, that's better.

7. CONTINUE SAVING - Congratulations, now that you're debt-free, continue saving and earning from different sources of income and you could even start investing. Don't start spending more than your means. Don't even think that you can borrow money again just because you're done paying. It's still the best feeling knowing that you don't need to hide from anyone of any institutions you borrowed money from. Being debt-free gives you a peace of mind that's very important for your mental health.

Now that you're debt-free or on the road to being debt-free, remember to keep on paying yourself first by saving. Then instead of spending for unnecessary expenses, why not invest them in insurances, mutual funds and other safe investment schemes from legitimate financial institutions. PIGEON PHILIPPINES WORKS WITH OPERATION SMILE PHILIPPINES

PIGEON PHILIPPINES recently announced its support for OPERATION SMILE PHILIPPINES, a non-profit organization that specializes in expert comprehensive cleft care. This collaboration between Pigeon, a global expert in mother and baby care, and Operation Smile, a global charity organization for children’s needs, has already begun in several neighboring Asian countries.

Ms. Cathy Que, Division Marketing Manager for Infant Products of Richwell Phils. Inc., the country's distributor of the Pigeon brand, formally handed over donations to Operation Smile Philippines' Executive Director Mr. Emiliano Romano and Operation Smile Regional Director for Philippines Mr. Kevin Thor at their Makati headquarters.

"Operation Smile Philippines assists those with cleft lip and palate, particularly those with limited or no financial resources to pay for surgery. They also have nutritional monitoring programs because it's necessary for babies to be healthy before an operation, and that's where Pigeon comes in because Pigeon cares for babies worldwide," Cathy explains. She also mentioned that Pigeon will be celebrating its 65th global anniversary in August, and that this collaboration with Operation Smile Philippines is just one of the perfect ways for the brand to show its continued support to Filipino mothers and babies in need.

According to Operation Smile Philippines statistics, one child is born with a cleft every three minutes, and one out of every 500 Filipino babies has a cleft condition. That is why the organization is committed to providing comprehensive cleft care to children and adults, allowing them to live happier and healthier lives.

"Surgery accounts for only about 10% to 20% of everything we do in Operation Smile. Another is nutritional support, which is why this collaboration with Pigeon would be extremely beneficial to us. The second would be dental, which could be a regular dental extraction or, if an adult is unable to receive open palate surgery, we do what we call an obturator, which is a prosthetic that we put inside the mouth just to temporarily close the palate," Emiliano explains. He mentions that Operation Smile also offers speech therapy and psychosocial support to people with cleft palates and their families due to the risk of bullying in the community. A baby with a cleft lip can be operated on at six months, and a one-year-old can have cleft palate surgery. “At Operation Smile, we're really focused on access to safe surgery. That's why we say six months because that's what we know that we can operate safely, that's the global medical standards that we've established worldwide. That's why we do lip and palate separately. When they're getting older, we have a priority system for our patients so once they get about the age of 10 or 12, that's when we start to do a second evaluation depending on their condition since the variations impact the safety of it…Other alterations that would support their speech is the primary thing for that case for older patients. Ultimately, we're trying to reach patients as young as possible because they are lower risk with surgical care,” says Kevin.

Pigeon Philippines' support meant a lot to Operation Smile Philippines because it would greatly improve the nutritional aspect of their comprehensive cleft care. Pigeon will not only provide tools to assist in the administration of proper nutrition to babies with cleft conditions, but it will also reduce patient rejection for surgery. “When we look at the patient's malnourishment in the initial screening, we can now provide products where moms can administer proper feeding sessions, giving their child proper nutrients so that when they return, they can receive surgery,” says Emiliano.

Takeda Philippines urges public to #ContinueCaring for Lymphoma Patients

As the COVID situation in the country is improving, biopharmaceutical leader Takeda Healthcare Philippines Inc. highlights the importance of providing continuous care for patients that are diagnosed with lymphoma.

“Now that restrictions are easing up, we have the opportunity to take initiative and engage in activities that will allow us to extend the much-needed assistance that lymphoma patients need,” said Loreann Villanueva, Country Manager of Takeda Philippines. “The situation may constantly change, but our commitment towards educating Filipinos about this disease and improving patient access to treatment and quality of lymphoma care remains the same.”

Knowing the enemy disease

Lymphoma is the most common type of blood cancer in the world. According to a study by the Global Cancer Observatory (Globocan), over 600,000 new cases of lymphoma were detected worldwide in 2020, making it the 11th most common cancer in the world.[1] In the Philippines, there were over 4,000 new patients that were diagnosed with this disease in 2020.[2]

It begins when an infection-fighting white blood cell (or lymphocyte) mutates, divides and grows out of control, compromising the immune system and lodging itself onto lymph nodes or "kulani" and causing them to swell. Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of lymphoma that involves the presence of a specific type of lymphocyte called Reed-Sternberg cells. Hodgkin lymphoma cases comprise one-fifth of all lymphoma cases in the world, making it a rare cancer.[3]

Like any other cancers, detecting the disease in its early stages is essential, as survival rates drop from 90% to 70% in patients with advanced stages of the disease. Hodgkin lymphoma shares common symptoms with other diseases such as fever, chills, night sweats, unexplained weight loss and fatigue. This, coupled with the fact that it is a relatively rare disease, makes it difficult for people to identify it in its early stages.

Diagnosing lymphoma entails several tests to confirm its type. One of which is through a bone marrow biopsy. Another one is through a series of panel tests called immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing, specifically the one that tests for the CD30 lymphoma marker. However, IHC is not a standard test in the country due to its cost and lack of availability in hospitals.

Plights of a lymphoma patient

Jheric Delos Angeles, lymphoma survivor-advocate and co-founder of Lymphoma Philippines, shared some of the struggles faced by lymphoma patients. These challenges include access to accurate diagnosis and new medicines, financial means, communication gaps with healthcare providers, cultural stigma, and discrimination.

Jheric Delos Angeles, Co-Founder of Lymphoma Philippines, was diagnosed with Stage IV Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) in May 2015.

Having battled lymphoma himself, he co-founded Lymphoma Philippines, a patient support group that aims to help patients and their loved ones who are diagnosed with the disease, and to raise awareness about lymphoma.

Apart from these barriers, Delos Angeles added, “Every individual requires a strong support system. In fact, Lymphoma Philippines was created to provide emotional support and empowerment, as well as to bridge the information gap.”

Takeda Philippines stands with all the lymphoma patients and recognizes the struggles they face, and the many dreams and hopes they are yet to fulfill. Hence, Takeda Philippines takes on the mission to create approaches that would help patients overcome the barriers and shares multiple ways on how the company shows continuity of care for lymphoma patients.

Takeda Philippines invests in various programs and solutions to address affordability barriers and to improve treatment access among patients. First, the company is guided by a tier-pricing approach where medicines are priced in a manner that reflects the holistic value they offer to patients, the healthcare system, and society. Secondly, Takeda Philippines has the Patient Assistance Program (PAP). This makes use of innovative and collaborative financing models to increase access to treatment and medicines for the recommended duration. “Aside from this, educating ourselves about the nature of the disease – its causes, symptoms, manifestations – is one of the first steps to take, which we can easily do by researching about lymphoma and attending talks facilitated by medical experts,” shared Dr. Joy Pabellon, Medical Affairs Lead at Takeda Philippines.

She added, “Engaging in conversations about lymphoma can also help strengthen the dialogue surrounding it. Through our social circles and platforms, we can create spaces for lymphoma awareness and care campaigns.”

A commitment to lymphoma patients
Takeda Philippines has engaged in several initiatives on lymphoma awareness, such as webinars, talks, and workshops, in partnership with national organizations for cancer. Earlier this year, it launched the “Spot Lymphoma, Stop Lymphoma,” a campaign that aims to raise awareness about lymphoma by providing free testing to patients, partnering with relevant organizations and institutions, and sponsoring talks and seminars to educate the public about the disease.

Recently, Takeda Philippines provided a Php 1,000,000 grant to Cancer Care Registry and Research Philippines Foundation (CARE PH) to expand cancer research efforts in the country. This initiative is geared towards providing a more comprehensive range of support for Filipino cancer patients. The grant will allow CARE PH to train encoders and lead additional site-specific cancer registries. It will be used in contributing to the research and development of newer diagnostic and therapeutic modalities to diagnose cancers earlier, while also ensuring that the best possible treatments are accessible and available to patients.

Furthermore, Takeda Philippines aims to sustain its efforts to provide patients access to the CD30 lymphoma marker test through a donation to the PHAPCares Foundation. The PHAPCares Foundation is the social responsibility arm of the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines (PHAP) mandated to help improve the health and lives of Filipinos disadvantaged by sickness, poverty, conflicts and disasters.

This year, the PHAPCares Foundation is partnering with one of the country's largest tertiary public referral hospitals for the CD30 Testing for Lymphoma Awareness and Prevention Program (CLAP) to facilitate early screening, diagnosis and confirmation of the disease. The CLAP initiative will provide CD30 testing for free to indigent Filipinos who would not have otherwise been tested.

“We are committed to outsmarting cancer so that more patients can benefit from—and have access to—life-transforming medicines. Through our cancer research and development, we are building up on our deep understanding of cancer to develop new ways to approach the disease,” said Villanueva.

She added, “In all our efforts, we seek not only to increase awareness about lymphoma, but also to heed the call of the government to implement the spirit of the National Integrated Cancer Control Act and for the medical, patient and healthcare community, to come together to work towards a cancer-free Philippines.”
