How To Let Go Of My Son But Still Stay Connected

My elder son is graduating from grade school this year.  I’m excited as he is, but at the same time a little bit anxious because his graduation would simply mean more independence for him.  More independence also means letting go of him little by little as he enters teenager years.  Yes I know, I worry too much.  Most of his classmates’ parents allow their children to already commute going home every day.  I don’t.  My son’s a few inches taller than I am, a handsome and smart-looking young man, and he still rides his school service every day.  I guess I’m being overprotective.  Bottom line is, I just want him to be safe.

One important lesson we always teach him is to have an open and consistent communication with us.  If he wants to commute going home, he has to call us first before he tells his school service provider that he won’t be riding with them.  He has to inform us the reason why he’s commuting, who he’s commuting with, what time he’s going home, and then I tell him what time he’s expected home.  Rules, rules, rules.  Abiding by it, instills discipline in the children, so when they are finally on their own, they know what to responsibly do.
Now, with these in mind, we need a high-speed and reliable data connectivity that will make communication seamless and uninterrupted.  I recently received great news from PLDT HOME DSL, our landline and DSL provider at home.  The new PLDT HOME DSL Speedster Fam Plan 1299 will allow me to share my monthly data allowance of 50GB.  I personally find this new plan helpful to my current challenge of “letting go” of my son.  Why?  This data sharing plan comes with a free smart phone for an additional P299 per month or with a free iPhone for P799 per month which is a perfect graduation gift for our son.  I can share 6GB of the 50 GB monthly data allocation to up to four mobile phone lines, and they can be used even outside the home, billed under one subscription.
I may be a clingy mom to my children, but I’m just really after their safety.  We all know how scary it is nowadays outside our homes.  It really worries me when my son’s not yet home.  I trust him really, don’t get me wrong.  It’s the environment and the roads he will pass through in the heart of Manila that I don’t trust.  So with the data sharing feature of PLDT HOME DSL’s Speedster Fam, I could worry less, because I know I could check on him through video calls or through IM on Facebook or Viber, which is the more popular means of communicating in their generation.  If ever time would come that he’d have a hard time commuting home, he could conveniently book an Uber ride and share with me a screen cap of his ride’s details.
More than the speed of connection, it’s the connectivity within the family that matters more to me and the feeling of relief that I could regularly communicate with him.  Iba kasi kapag kampante ka of the whereabouts of the members of the family, yung alam mong safe sila even in this digitally-driven world we’re living in.

I’m glad PLDT HOME DSL and Smart partnered to make this innovation happen, specifically its data sharing feature within the family, because it gives me the sense of security and feeling of constantly being connected with each other.  I cannot stress how communication and connectivity are important values in the family.  Now, the challenge of “letting go” of my son as he transitions to high school and teenage years, will be easier because of the new PLDT HOME DSL’s Speedster Fam.

My only remaining problem and challenge as a mom, is for him not to have a girlfriend yet.  I hope PLDT HOME DSL’s Speedster Fam also has an answer for that too.  Well if you're a mom of boys like me, you'd understand.  Then you should also give your loved ones the family-sized connection they deserve. 1. Wow, Louise, he's so binata already!!! I know that in a few years, I'll be in the same situation that you're in now, and I don't know if I'm ready!!! But seriously, I super agree with you that communication is so important.

I grew up in a household where we were free to tell our parents what we thought and how we felt, and this helped keep my siblings and I in check and out of trouble. Or if we ever got into trouble, my parents were always there to bail us out because they knew what was going on.

This is something I am really striving to do with Little MrC. I want him to know he can always talk to us about anything.

  2. Alam mo ba Patty, Dandre is still openly communicating to me about his friends, school, crushes, and other stuff. I'm so glad that I was able to train him to be open and to just ask anything involving ANY topic under the sun. He had asked me about girls, about marriage, about what he should do to attain his dreams.. lahat. I'm so thankful that he trusts me that much and I am not ever going to break it. I really pray this openness could go on until he's an adult na. I want to be really in touch with him all throughout. I may not know everything lalo na now he's being so independent, but at least he still opens up even the juiciest details of his young life. :)
